compiz not working at ALL-- help! 7,10 ubuntu geforce 4200Go
 

Hi everyone, I'm having a big problem w/ my compiz as it's not working at all.. I have tried various guides and tutorials but none of them seem to work. I simply always get desktop effects could not be enabled. I'm using a GeForce4 4200 Go. I just posted another thread about this on the Ubuntu forums and there I listed the output of some commands.

I was able to get compiz working in OpenSuSE 10.3 and SLED10 on a Dell D800 with that same chipset BUT.... the performance was so absolutely, horribly unusable that I had to disable it again....

I was using the official nvidia drivers FWIW..

dunno if it was just that laptop or not but I'd say based on that experience that the 4200 Go chipset is just too damn slow to even attempt desktop effects...

I bet you're pretty close to right too but I still think a 4200Go can do wobbly windows for me...

What I experienced was performance sooo bad that it would take literally 10 minutes to do a screen refresh... not just a little slow.. but completely unusable.... I currently have Ubuntu 7.10 on it... when I get back to work I'll try to enable XGL on it and see if it also is unusable... I suspect it will be tho...
