Compile kernel in Dapper Drake

Hello :-)
I was a slackware user and as soon as i started using ubuntu (dapper) i loved it (i even loved gnome!).
now running ubuntu for a month, i think i should compile a kernel for my hardware. one of my objectives for compiling the kernel is to include 'reiserfs, LVM, RAID etc' as kernel object (choosing Y) rather than a module (choosing M). one of the objectives is to not to use any initrd.img (it gives a lot of pain). i need some help on compiling and ducking out init ram disk. i tried once, but as usual, as there is initrd.img, i failed.
