command line device listing and info

Hello,

I'm relatively new to linux. I've just installed Breezy on a new computer and 1) not quite sure how to use my cd burner (it doesn't automatically activate a dialog window as in xp) and 2) want to see if the os is even recognizing the device. Is there a command line option to list all known devices on my system? If so, will it also tell me the device name and type?

Thanks Much,

ab

I`ve not tried breezy linux.
But can u try these following commands in your command line.
Hope they work

lspci
-Will list all the pci devices connected to the PC

hdparm -i /dev/hda
hdparm -i /dev/hdb

Will give information about IDE devices [harddisk,cd-drive] etc.

And for cd-record the gui tool i use is k3b.

In command line you can try

cdrecord --scanbus

If this displays the CD-writer then you can use it for burning.

puzzle: it's supposed to. You stick blank media in and wait a bit.

lspci will list all your pcibus stuff. Is that what you mean? (man lspci to see the options)

Breezy also has a hardware browser: system > admin > device manager

with the cd burner - how have you been trying to use it?

The base cli tool is called "cdrecord" - however, I'd stick a blank cdrom into the drive, wait for it to settle, then do a dmesg | tail

What is supposed to happen is you get a small dialog opening saying "you have inserted a blank disc, what would you like to do" with some options.

dmesg should report:
Code:
[4461394.541000] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

Thanks for the tips. I'll try this when I get home and hopefully get this running.

HI,

I used demesg to investigate and found the following line which I'm assuming is my cd writer:

hdc: ATAPI 40X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache

The drive opens, the drive light blinks after I put a brand new blank cd in and nothing happens. Am I missing something?

Thanks Much,

ab
