why did you upgrade to the newer kernel? What version of Ubuntu are you running? 12.04 or something else? Where did the kernel come from?
Cinnamon isn't made by Ubuntu and, regardless of what the Mint guys will tell you, Cinnamon isn't all beer and skittles. In fact Cinnamon is just another attempt at appeasing the Mint fanboys who want Gnome 2 back. MGSE failed, MATE failed, they don't like Gnome 3, so they try yet another type.
If you are running 12.04 have you checked to see if it is compatible?
My advice to start with is start in recovery mode then go to low graphics mode and see if things are how they should be. In low graphics mode check of any packages are broken. If there are broken packages try to fix them. I doubt the kernel update broke it I think you may have updated or installed something else as well and that has caused your issue.
Sorry if this doesn't seem helpful but you give no information that really helps us to even start to help you.
