Lightbulb Chrome Breaks Plugin

Recently have been unable to view Utube because plugin would not load. I have been using Chrome. I also have Firefox installed. Went to Firefox, same problem. Not able to change Chrome away from being Default browser. Deleted Chrome. Firefox will now play Utube. Chose Firefox as default browser and no longer use Chrome. Am happy camper now. I know others have had problems with Chrome and Utube. This solution worked for me after reading and trying numerous so called fixes and apt get this and apt get that. Sooooo, to me, it appears that Chrome, at least under the latest updates that I always perform, does not play well with Utube. I went back and installed Chrome and verified that the problem exist as long as Chrome is installed. Sooooo, is the problem with Ubuntu????? or Chrome?????? or is there a problem that prevents them from playing well together. As a side note, I am disgusted with Chrome. Seems as if they are going the Microsoft route and forcing users to use their browser with no option to change default.

I've never had a problem with Chrome not playing anything from YouTube, so without more details, I'm not sure how to advise you. As far as setting the default browser, although an older thread, does the solution here work, assuming you've already tried changing this through the browser itself?

Regards...

I only experienced the problem after one of the updates from Ubuntu. I can not tell you which one as there have been many and I like to keep up to date. For me, the problem is solved so no reason to advise me; just thought I would post so others can see if it solves their problem. Even if deleted, it is easy to re-install Chrome if one wishes and the bookmarks are still there if one decides to re-install.

By the way, please keep your religious crap to yourself or post to a religious forum where it belongs.

Folks on LQ are given considerable freedom to post content of their choice in their signatures and for the sake of others who might want/need to hear the Gospel, I have no intention of removing it.

If you would like to discuss religion, I will do so, but not here.

Getting back to the original post, and the topic; I can also now play Pandora. I could not before I removed Chrome. I do appreciate the information on how to use the command line way to change default browsers but IMHO, this should not be necessary. It should be an option within the browser itself. I have no intention of ever using Chrome again. Now, for those reading this thread, if you are having difficulty viewing Utube and or Pandora because the plugin would not load and if you have both Firefox and Chrome installed, try deleting Chrome. Not to worry, your bookmarks are still there and will be available should you ever re-install Chrome. It may not work for everyone but it worked for me and given the amount of post on this problem area, many people are having problems even after trying a lot of the advice from various others. Your results may vary.

Just in case you did not know

Chrome Browser disabled Flash support starting with version 55

http://news.softpedia.com/news/googl...t-510702.shtml

Edit: 2 ways to handle this

forcing users to use their browser with no option to change default.
1. You can go into chrome settings and change it from disable to enable.

2. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/s...hrome-ntp-icon

or. You can throw the baby out with the bath water. I own a chromebook and a Samsung S7 Edge android phone that uses Google Chrome browser. So I bothered to find out what was going on 1st before assuming anything.

OK Youtube is html5 now unless you force flash. html5 is going to use h264 or something else. The big thing when they do not play you will need to open pulse audio control and make sure that plugin is directed to the correct device. If you do not do that it will not play it will freeze youtube server sends back a complaint. Chrome for linux does not support mp4 it is up to you to use Chromium of some one that builds it in. The fact is it does not need mp4 to play the html5 because there is 3 more decoders that it will push it to. Keep it simple. Learn why it took this many years to finally get html5 to stop just using default device. hw,0,0

The "simple" thing for me is to delete Chrome and use Firefox which does not require jumping through hoops to get things to work.

He didn't post it, it's his signature, it gets put at the end of every every post. You said you'd be happy to discuss religion, just not here. He didn't ask to discuss religion with you, he was trying to help with your Linux problem.

Had you not brought it up, it would have never been discussed, is my point.
