change file permission external usb hdd

Hi all (again)...

Well I got my hdd operating in ubuntu. However, with one problem out of the way, another one occurs.

It seems now that i cannot write to my external usb hdd. When i try to write to it or modify a file on it, i get the following response:

'cannot write to W_DIGITAL. you are trying to write to a read-only disk'.

I went into terminal and gained root access. I went into the /media/ folder and tried the following command:

chmod +w W_DIGITAL

However, I get the response:

chmod: changing permissions of `W_DIGITAL': Read-only file system

Thus, it cannot change the file permissions.

Any ideas?

Thanks to everyone who read/replied to my query.

thanks,
Dan
