cd/dvd rom mount problem

When I try to mount my dvds/cds ubuntu tells me the drive is empty, hence it cannot mount the volume.
This problem first occurred after I tried to burn a dvd, before this the drive functioned perfectly.

My google-fu skllz are good, but not this good, apparently. I have failed in epic proportions, please help!

Uuugg...maybe your drive is dead. Try using a direct drive access application like a CD player or boot with a bootable cd, a live cd for example. If as you said, the problem arrived after you tried burn a dvd (a long burning time), it seems probable.

This happened to me.

I had two drives, one was an older CD-RW, the other was a DVD-RW, the problem resolved itself when I removed the CD-RW drive, the old dead drive drug both down with it.

Well, the laptop which the ubuntu istallation is on (updated as of today), is my flat mates... using bootable dvd/cd doesn't work, my flat mate wants windows back, which is when we discovered something was wrong.
when I "sudo lshw" I find the dvd/cd drive, its there, but it says its "probably" empty, nice way of saying it... probably...
Now I've been browsing and googling around, getting hints leaning towards the "/etc/fstab" and "/etc/modules" files being modified, but none of the modifications listed has worked so far. Last thing I stumbled over was something about "ide-generic.ko", the file exists in the filesystem, but I'm not sure what its about, or what to do.

Does anyone here have hints, links or something?

We are aware that the dvd-drive might be ruined, by the burning process, I find this strange though, but you never know.. that basically means that ubuntu, or Brasero, ruined it... which is sad. a pity really.
