I've only used dvgrab via firewire but here are some ideas.
Probably too late for your project.

so far no luck ubuntu feisty (after installing xawtv and mjpegtools) seems to have some major issues with xawtv, I read some threads concerning this,
i think they don't believe it to be necessary to capture analog video cause everybody has firewire (well not me!) it doesn't even start!
i read in a thread here that with knoppix the person had no problem and everything seems to let me believe it to be possible
with d:b xawtv starts but soon after (1sec) the whole system freezes and i have to reboot, i still have to check what causes it in the /var/log/messages and i'll post it maybe someone can show me a way then

Cool xawtv working in my old pc but not hasciicam

is there another way i can use asciiart , a small distro perhaps

now i got the card working on an old 166mmx , 74mb, 2G hd with dynebolic and my desktop pc had problems probably related to ubuntu installation and this old box does it , so i'm trying anything possible

although my dmesg gives

DC10plus[0]: UNKNOWN ioctl cmd: 0xc0cc5615
4vl_set_format() - video buffer size (128 kb) is too small

and then i guess other options related to drivers etc. with unsopported/unknown
and then rest of the lines
VIDIOC_S_FMT -unknown/unsupported format 0x0 ( )
VIDIOC_S_FMT -unknown/unsupported format 0x0 ( )

dmesg is longer though

i also commented another code forgot
and the the output was forget already, .. no grabbing device selected or so

but i can watch tv /video with xawtv , can change settings only no recording/grabbing (maybe root of hasciicam problem) and the av output flickers

another thing the dmesg ouput gives alot is abot memmory so the issue/problem can be anything rite
just learning linux in a creative way !
