Cannot update or install software

Hi I'm using Kubuntu and i can't update or install new software with Adpet, it keeps giving me this message:

Another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude). Please close the other application before using this one.

I check the process table in KSysGuard and i don't see anything like that listed. WHat's goin' on?? I've also restarted my computer a few times as well.

can try googling with this ::

Another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude)

Have you tried rebooting, or at least logging out since the problem started? It might be helpful to see the output of ps -A from a terminal.

I had the same problem recently. It turned out that I had used "force quit" on a local .deb file that wasn't quite right and that had left a zombie process that locked my package database. Before I learned this though, I rebooted and tried many other things to get back the installer. In the end, I deleted all of the files in the /tmp dir (in single user mode) and this fixed the problem - I guess by deleting the lock file. I don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a try, and it doesn't hurt anything.
