Can't upgrade from Kubuntu 10.04 to 12.04.1

Hi Folks,
I'm assuming that Kubuntu questions are allowed in this section!

I have just accepted the systems offer to upgrade to the latest stable version (12.04) and after a bit of fetching I get the following message just before the upgrade exits.

kbhW:Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...source/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.182 80]
, W:Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...source/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.182 80]
, W:Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...source/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.182 80]
, W:Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...source/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.182 80]
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Distribution upgrade process exited with code 1.

I've tried running the upgrade from the command line with the same result. I have a feeling that I'm missing something fairly basic here - all suggestions welcome.

Many thanks,
Steve.

The broken links are the Backports repository for Karmic; this was the 9.10 release and is now completely unsupported, which is why those links have been removed from the repos.

My recommendation is to edit your sources.list file using your favorite editor (such as nano):

Code:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
And remove any line mentioning "karmic-backports". Then save the file and try your update again.

Excellent Snowpine. Thank you for this, it makes a lot of sense, I will try your suggestion tomorrow and report back.

Cheers,
Steve.
