Can't start display server on ubuntu 7.10 with VGA compatible 82G965 video controller

Hi

I have just installed ubuntu 7.10 on a Gateway computer (GM5410H - about a year old), and no display server got installed. The video controller is VGA compatible Intel Corp 82G965. I manually installed gnome and, I think, all of the gdm and x stuff, which now leaves me with the error:

'The display server has been shut down 6 times in the last 2 minutes. It is likely that something bad is going on' !

Can somebody help? I have no idea what to try next.

Thanks,
Celia

Can't start display server on ubuntu 7.10 with VGA compatible 82G965 video controller

I have managed to get a windowing system (gnome) running, but it's not quite usable. I used

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

to try to set the resolution to 1920x1200, but the system still comes up in low resolution mode. The reconfigure tool that comes up with the low-resolution warning only allows me to choose resolutions of 800x600 or 640x480!

All the windows I open (terminals, web browsers, etc.) seem to open in the top left side of the monitor with the top and left sides off of the screen!

My monitor is from Gateway (FPD2485W) with resolution 1920x1200 and size 524mm x 321mm.

Can ubuntu work with this monitor? If so, what do I have to do to get it to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Celia

P.S.: Since the original ubuntu installation didn't add any of the X stuff, it is possible that I am missing some packages...
