What happens when it boots, does gdm or kdm start and just wont let you in with your password, or is x starting and locking, or not starting at all?

When I boot up, kdm starts and lets me login, but all I get is a black screen for a second, then kdm shows up again.

In the menu (bottom button on left) in kdm, which desktop to you have it set trying to load? It sounds to me that your window manager is failing to start.

Try going into a console and do sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop to stop kdm. Then create a .xinitrc file in your home directory and put in it:
exec startkde
Then try doing startx and see what happens. It may give us some output to help that we cant see from kdm. You can also do startx &>out.txt to write the output to a textfile for examination l8r.

I found the problem: kdm is messed up. I am switching to gdm.
