Can't get KZenExplorer or KIO NJB working in Kubuntu 7.10

Hi folks,

New to Kubuntu (migrating from openSUSE), recently installed Gutsy and having a couple of issues, any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Basically I'm having problems getting KZenExplorer and KIO Nomad Jukebox working.

On launching KZenExplorer, the splash screen gets as far as "Getting playlists from jukebox", then hangs. Yesterday, launching KZenExplorer from Konsole consistently generated the following output (or very similar):

Code:
james@james-desktop:~$ kzenexplorer
james@james-desktop:~$ X Error: BadImplementation (server does not implement operation) 17
  Major opcode: 20
  Minor opcode: 0
  Resource id: 0x19
Xlib: sequence lost (0x118a9 > 0x19c1) in reply type 0x16!
X Error: BadImplementation (server does not implement operation) 17
  Major opcode: 20
  Minor opcode: 0
  Resource id: 0x8298578
Xlib: sequence lost (0x119d7 > 0x1b78) in reply type 0x1!
Today, if I launch it from Konsole, the splash screen comes up and then hangs again, but I get no output in Konsole, and after a while the frozen splash screen disappears, but KZenExplorer still appears on the list of running processes if I do ps -ef.

Secondly, in Konqueror, if I type "njb:/" into the location bar, I can see the top level folder structure (albums, all, artists, etc and playlists), but I can't get into any of these folders - all I get is an error message saying "Could not connect to host Nomad Jukebox"

Oddly, Gnomad2 seems to work absolutely fine.

The versions of the relevant packages which are currently installed on my system are:

kzenexplorer: 0.6-1ubuntu1.
kionjb: 0.1.6-4.
libnjb5: 2.2.5-4.1ubuntu2

I don't have njbtools installed, do I need it?

libmtp6 is also installed, version 0.2.1-0ubuntu3, but I'm not sure whether I need this or not, since my player is on the older firmware (it's a Creative Zen Micro, firmware version 1.11.01). Could there be some kind of conflict between libmtp and libnjb?

Even though Gnomad2 works OK, I'd still prefer to get KZenExplorer and/or KIO Nomad Jukebox working if possible. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Cheers

James.

Do you have an intel graphics chip. On google I found this Archlinux bug report that the xf86-video-intel driver that the user was using caused the error but an older "stable" version didn't. Does this sound familiar?

Hi jschiwal,

Thanks for the reply. The second comment on the page that you posted does look very similar to the error that I've been getting, but my graphics card isn't Intel, it's an NVidia GeForce4 MX400.

The following packages related to NVidia are installed on my system:

linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22.4-14.10 (includes module nvidia)
nvidia-glx 1:1.0.9639+2.6.22.4-14.10
nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu7
xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:2.1.5-1ubuntu1

Some alternative packages seem to be available (at least I can see them in Synaptic):

nvidia-glx-legacy 1.0.7185+2.6.22.4-14.10
nvidia-glx-new 100.14.19+2.6.22.4-14.10
(and corresponding dev and kernel-source packages)

Might it help if I take out nvidia-glx and replace it with the legacy or new packages?

I'm seeing different behaviour from KZenExplorer again today - I installed njbtools, and then KZenExplorer started without freezing, but it still gave me the same output as before (BadImplementation) etc. Then the second time I tried, it was back to freezing again, just like before. This is really confusing!

Installing njbtools seems to have made no difference to Kio NJB.

Any further advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks

James.

Look in /usr/share/doc/. There may be an nvidia directory with a readme file listing which drivers should use the legacy driver. My laptop needs a legacy driver. My desktop uses a newer driver. The nvidia website download page may provide these details as well. However, if a legacy driver were required, I don't think you would have been able to install the regular driver. The nvidia kernel driver package will need to match your version of the kernel.

You could try downloading the nvidia installation program. Maybe your current version also has the same bug, and a newer version fixed it. There may be a file listing the difference between versions and the bugs they fixed.

Maybe the current version also has the same bug but a slightly older version doesn't.

I use amarok to transfer files in my Vision M. ( I have bad video on it though ) There are also the mtp-* programs used in the terminal and the mtpfs fuse filesystem. Using the latter, I will get a connection reset after deleting a file. It seems to me that there should be a delay between certain operations or the device isn't ready.

OK, tried a few things, here's what happened.

1. Removed nvidia-glx and replaced it with nvidia-glx-new. Ran the command "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable" (as per the instructions that came with the package). Couldn't get a working X server at all.

2. Removed nvidia-glx-new and replaced it with nvidia-glx-legacy and ran sudo nvidia-glx-config enable. Good news: got a working X server, and KZenExplorer appeared to work fine! Bad news: my screen resolution went to 800x600, and try as I might I couldn't get it any better than that. I can't work in that resolution, so had to go back to the original setup.

3. Removed nvidia-glx-legacy, replaced it with nvidia-glx, and ran sudo nvidia-glx-config enable again. Good news: got my 1280x1024 resolution back. Bad news: Now back to seeing the 'BadImplementation' error when running KZenExplorer, just like before. Also got the following:

Xlib: sequence lost (0x116de > 0x18bf) in reply type 0x13!
Xlib: sequence lost (0x116dd > 0x18bf) in reply type 0x13!

Am I doomed to having to choose between a working KZenExplorer and a reasonable screen resolution, or might there be something else that I could try?

Thanks

J.

Update: still can't figure out any way to solve this - have removed KZenExplorer and KioNJB and am using Gnomad2 instead. Not as good an application in my view, but it works, which is the important thing.

Moving on...
