Can't create filesystem

Ok, I'm sure this is a neophyte question. I am admittedly a rank amateur with computers in general and with Linux in particular, but I have been playing around with various generations of Fedora for a while.

I have a copy of Ubuntu 6.06 on a magazine CD that I'm trying to install. The installation goes fine until I get to the screen where I click on "Erase the entire hard drive" or something similar. The installation then progresses a while, I get a message that the HD has been partitioned, but then an error stating that anaconda (or whatever) "failed to create a filesystem". Now nothing works. When I boot without the Ubuntu CD in now I get a grub> prompt, so I assume the HD was erased and partitioned. I can still boot Ubuntu from the CD.

What am I doing wrong?

it doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong... sounds more like a bug or something... have you tried using the installer's manual partitioning option?? you might have better luck with that...

How manually partitioning the HD will help this is (obviously) beyond me, but I'll give it a shot. Can't claim to be very swift at partitioning either, though. More to follow...

Woo-hoo! It worked.

Next hurdle: installing Adobe Flash player. Since there is no "root", per se, in Ubuntu I can't seem to install the thing anywhere but my home directory. Rather annoying to someone who prefers the GUI, but I guess I'll have to struggle through the command line.

Thanks!

how many user accounts you got on your PC?? if it's just one or two, then installing into each home's directory can be a good option... for example, on my home's PC, i installed on my account the Flash 9 Beta 2, while on my parent's account i have the Flash 7 installed...

anyhow, to install it system-wide just copy the files as you would normally but using sudo to gain superuser privilages... the command sequence would go something like this:
Code:
wget http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer9_update/FP9_plugin_beta_112006.tar.gz

tar xvzf FP9_plugin_beta_112006.tar.gz

cd flash-player-plugin-9.0.21.78/

killall firefox-bin

sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/
sudo will ask you for your password before it copies the file...

and then you're done and can start firefox... good luck!!!
