Can't adjust sound

Ubuntu 5.10 gnome
onboard soundcard

I can't adjust the volume? It's very loud, quality is fine though.
I got no control in the Master settings or XMMS. In Master volume I can't do anything, in XMMS I can at least turn it off, but if it's set too 1% or 100% does not make a difference.
Just installed ubuntu yesterday but I think this is my own doing since I install some codec, unsure.
Sorry know theres a lot of sound questions, but I didn't find anything I understood.
Thank you

Tried to reinstall gnome-volume-control. Tried to change the device from Alsa to OSS Mixer.
Now I get an error ones in a while
error
failed to open audio out: OSS Driver 1.2.10
Other then that it's like before, still working but can't adjust the sound level.

Got it :)
XMMS -> Options -> Preferences -> Output Plugin -> Change OSS Driver too ALSA Driver
....opps

You were probably getting OSS errors, because its modulized in your kernel, and you never loaded the module. Congrats on fixing your own problem.
