C or gcc compiler in Ubuntu

I'm looking under add/remove programming

Under Developer Tools:

Devhelp
Emacs 21
Font Forge
Glade xxx
bunch of K crap

What the ???

I'm looking for a C compiler.
Did I stumble on the wrong OS?

-----

apt-get is it?
yum?

What is the current tool to do set-up on this environment?

-----

I'm not usually this crusty, but my goodness is this Linux?

-----

Go ahead flame away.
At least I'm still trying

apt-get install gcc

works just fine

Ultimately I was able to install apache 2.2 from source in minutes (after I figured apt-get was the Ubuntu choice)

I'm going to hang around for a while

Now if we could only overcome the root issues
