Breezy Repositories

Hello,

I'm relatively new to ubuntu and apt-get. I've edited my /etc/apt/sources.list file by uncommenting all reposotories. First of all, is this a good idea? Also, with all repositories open, there are some packages that I still cannot get such as mplayer (and using the step-by-step instructions on ubuntuguide). Will someone educate me on using repositories wisely or give me a sample of your source.list file? Perhaps there is an online doc that you can point me to.

All Help Very Much Appreciated,

ab

You want to try a few repositories for speed. Usually ones closer will be faster. When you decide on one, leave it as a choice and perhaps one other. It is very unlikely both will be down. Leaving all selected will just slow you down, because dpkg will try to contact all to look for the latest and greatest package.

Thanks for your reply. It seems though that not all packages are available in all repositories. How do I know what package is in what repository, just trial and error? Is there a package list somewhere that I can peruse?

Thanks Again,

ab

The repositories are mirrored and it may take a few hours or days to get all changes copied, especially if there are many.

apt-get update

will show which mirrors are in sync with your installed debs because they will be "hit" and not downloading an update. If they download a new packages list,
apt-get upgrade
may do something, but I normally do not worry and issue both commands routinely. You could use
apt-get update;apt-get upgrade
and likely everything will be automatic.

If there is an extremely urgent update for security, you might include the central repository in your sources. I would not do this routinely because those folks get very busy and we love them.
