black screen when installing, video drivers?

I am trying to install Kubuntu 9.04 on my system. I ran the CD error check first and that passed. As soon as I try to start the install it goes to a black screen. I think it doesn't like my ATI Radeon X1650 card. Is there any boot option I can put to try to use a simpler graphics driver, like the x.org ATI Radeon driver? I have read that the ATI proprietary fglrx drivers don't work with my card anymore. Maybe the installer is trying to use that driver.

I tried the option for graphics safe mode but the install still goes to a black screen.

Strange, with FC9 / FC10 you can type

Code:

linux text
at the very first prompt you get to after booting off the install DVD / CD and then you can do the entire install in text mode...

How about trying Fedora instead of Ubuntu?

I've had many problems getting Ubuntu to work on my system, dropping it and trying Fedora worked 100% on the same hardware and setup... maybe on your side as well?

I am actually usually a Slackware user but I wanted to try Ubuntu. I got it to work by first booting into the install CD as a Live CD, and then installing from there.
