Black Screen After Installing Ubuntu 11.10

Hello everyone,

I finished installing Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit on my desktop and it asked me to restart the computer to complete the process. I restarted and...nothing came up...just a black screen with a white dot...and I have absolutely no idea what to do now :-(

I started to read the posts here, but got completely lost and have no idea which solution is appropriate for my problem as I don't get any option here, it boots directly to this black screen, no recovery option, no grub, no cmd, nothing...just the black screen with the blinking dot :-(

I would appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance,

linux.girl

BTW: My motherboard is a g41 with video card built-in. My CPU is intel e5700 dual core.

Is Ubuntu the only operating system?
You do have a 64-bit machine?
Try the second suggestion on the page below.
http://thedaneshproject.com/posts/ub...n-boot-solved/

Another option:
http://samiux.blogspot.com/2011/05/h...up-ubuntu.html

If these don't work, just google ubuntu boots to black screen

Hi!

yes and yes, ubuntu is the only OS and I do have a 64 bit machine.

I tried the option 2 of that page you mentioned (pressing shift), but grub still did not come up :-(

The other option in the second page you gave me also didn't work.

I will keep trying, and thank you so much for the help! If I manage to get it to work I will write here how.

Holding "Shift" should bring up Grub.

Here is another thread on this. Try this trick first (it is post 20 in that thread) and let us know how you go.

Thanks a lot for the advise, but the shift key did not bring up grub. I am getting some advise and it seems that the problem is connected to my video card. I will keep you guys posted once I try this other solution I was offered, let you know if it works, etc.

Problem solved - thanks to post 20! And thanks for pointing it out!!!!

A more detailed explanation:

I decided to try the post 20 option (upgrade from ubuntu 11.10 to ubuntu 11.10), to see what happens. While I was doing this option, just before the installation started, it popped a message saying that I had no swap and it offered me to go back to the partition part to make a partition for the swap. I did go back and found myself in the advanced partition menu of the install CD. Note that the previous times that I installed, I simply chose in which disk I want to install ubuntu (I have two in my desktop, one of 1T and one of 160G). I chose the 1T all the time and did not go into the advanced partition thing because I wanted a simple install, ubuntu on all the 1T disk. Now that I was forced to enter there due to this swap message, I noticed that on the previous installation (the one that did boot into the black screen), it somehow chose to install the MBR in the 160G disk instead of in the 1T disk, which is the one I had always chosen.

Anyways, I made the swap partition, chose the 1T for the MBR and proceeded with the upgrade ubuntu 11.10 to ubuntu 11.10 option. It took more than 2 hours to complete the installation (as opposed to 20/30 mins on previous times) and in the end, low and behold, it booted OK.

Now I don't know if what solved the problem is the fact that I corrected the location where MBR should be installed OR the ubuntu 11.10 to ubuntu 11.10 upgrade option OR a combination of both.

Thanks again!

What a silly idea. You are no fun at all.

You are probably one of those people that think a menu has some use.

Read. Geech.

Your absolutely right I need to loosen up lol.

What's a menu? Just give me the pictures of what I have a choice to eat and I'll decide from that.
