Black screen after Chrome update on 14.04 LTS

It's now nearly a year since I switched to Ubuntu (14.04) as my mainstay OS on 3 ThinkPads. Lots of learning through minor disasters this year - all worth it. New minor disaster:

Pulled out one dual-boot X60 to update software on both sides of partition (Win7). Ran sudo update, then sudo upgrade. I'm still a newbie...maybe this wasn't the thing to do? All seemed ok...

My version of Chrome was no longer supported - downloaded the .deb file from Chrome's home base and used Software Center to install (which has worked in the past).

All seemed well until the box awoke from sleep - now I only get black screen on Chrome. Reinstalling (first using Software Center, then terminal) didn't change anything. Firefox works fine.

Searching the forums, I haven't found a single definitive answer. I can't uncheck hardware acceleration on Settings because ... the Settings page is blacked out. I understand Nvidia drivers can be an issue.

Help?

Well, to question 2 - I prefer Chrome. And when something doesn't work, I want to see if I can fix it.

To question 1 - I'm a relative newbie...I'll have a look. Should I post the result here?

Thanks!

...in any case, the answer is ...

First tried without sudo (Permission denied).

Then with sudo: No such file or directory

(Next?)

Thanks!

PROBLEM RESOLVED after reboot with no further interventions on my part. Seems ok.

That said, I'm still curious about what might have caused this.

I can't offer any insight on the problem you experienced, other than sometimes a reboot is necessary...

I would suggest that instead of downloading the .deb file, it is more efficient to install chrome using the automated google installer -
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrom...top/index.html
That creates a ppa, so that the (frequent) security updates are installed automatically.
