big white box in the middle of my screen
 

Everytime I get the root password prompt for anything that may require it, I enter my password and then I am left with a box on my screen then I must reboot. This started after I reinstalled Ubuntu 7.10 and I even tried to reinstall again but still have same problem.

What kind of system is this, laptop or non-laptop?

How much memory does it have?

What kind of graphics does it have?

Does your GRUB menu (you have about 3 secs to press ESC to get into it, when you first boot) have a recovery option?

2 gig RAM
Radeon RX300HM 128MG RAM

and Yes, it does have the recovery option. However I have reinstalled three times now with the same problem. I am unsure of what I could have done as on the original install I did not have this problem.

Your problem has outstripped my knowledge. The only thing I can think of to do in recovery mode is to run

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and try the vga driver. Take the default settings for everything else, and if you do change something, change one thing per running of the program, so you'll know what you did.

Hopefully, someone more experienced will add their knowledge.

I'll give it a shot.... then let ya know what happens
