Big problem ( lost GUI capabilities)

I have Ubuntu 7.10 and I wasn't attending my computer and letting a friend look around at Ubuntu since they are interested in switching to Ubuntu or another version of Linux. they got into the settings somehow and disabled a GUI log in....so now I log into only a terminal...almost as though I was running MSDOS again and I need to know how to get the GUI back on by way of a terminal....PLEASE HELP

Do you still get the graphical login window? In that case, click on the "sessions" button to select a GNOME login session instead of a console login session. Then login, and it will ask you if you want it to be your default login session (click on Yes).

No the login is also the same as the other...I think that is what was disabled cause I saw it right before it happened...something along the lines of disable GUI login

In that case, I'm not so familiar with how to fix it. You can try "startx" or "gdm" to get to a graphical interface. If either of those get you to a GNOME desktop, then you can use the login window configuration under the "Administration" menu to re-enable GUI login.

I got the GUI back now I just need to get the top and bottom task bars again...there is a space for them they are just apparently opaque cause I can hold the mouse over them and if they are on an icon a description will show....any suggestions?

NVM it was just some strange opacity settings I found it.

Lesson learned, supervise that friend on your computer. Its kind of assinine to 1. Change settings on a someone else's computer, and 2, in an OS that he likely knows very little about.

In future, if you wish to let your friend play with your linux computer, create a new account just for for him first.
Then, when he has totally messed up his desktop, you still have yours.
Unless you told him the root password of course ;)
