best virtualbox/ ubuntu guest combo

Hi, I have virtualbox 4.3.18, and a ubunutu 14 guest. Installed guest additions and messed with all kinds of settings, given it enourmous video ram and processors (Im on a fat mac) but to no avail. It is slow and annoying like a windows PC.
I've heard that Virtualbox 4.3.6 does not have those issues. Can anyone confirm this?

Thank you!

Ubuntu is a little resource hungry.
Maybe try a debian VM see how that works?

a little?...I got a 4 second wait between every click.Its unusable.
Can you recommend a stable debian version?
IS it possible to just try to install an older version of VBox without uninstalling the newer one?

txs!

Debian Wheezy or Jessie are both pretty stable.

Isn't it something to do with unity requiring 3D rendering ?. I don't use vbox a lot but what options do you have there ?.

The last time I installed Ubuntu it enabled 3D & installed guest additions.
The OP can check vbox settings to confirm.

yes, I have guest additions and 3d acceleration enabled. The most promising advice from some other board was to downgrade Vbox.
I dont remember what exactly but something is different in all these newer versions. It may have had to do with Unity.
