Back up Ubuntu on another partition

I recently installed dapper and lost files while changing the comuper name. Is there a method or app that will allow me to back up the entire sysem then reinstall if necessary. Should there be a back up on a separate partition?

I recommend you back up your /home directory tree to a separate partition. Its even possible to restore your /home tree into a clean install.

Partitioning

I have dapper installed on the entire disk of one of my computers. I want to partition it for back up and other uses. What app is best to use for this?

Also, any suggestions on a particular partitioning shceme (number of partitions and their uses)? I will run only Ubuntu on this computer.

Their are lots of technical opinions on this. From a practical standpoint I start with swap and / and add two more. One of those is an extended partition to allow as many partitions as you need. Then I create a /Share partition where my documents, videos, MP3s and other non-distro specific data will go. Next is an /Other partition for a place to build a second distro or use for a backup when upgrading versions.

I thought that only one backup partition may not be enough. Thanks for the expertise.

www.getautomatix.com is a nice peice of software whereby you can download various apps. Once of them is a nice backup / restore application. Worth a punt.
