Back To Gnome From KDE, Screen Resolution Problems.
 

Hi, I tried out KDE, and it worked, but back in Gnome the screen resolution was wrong, blocky.

On start up it said it could not detect the graphics card...

It would not fulfill changes to the screen resolution and the only options were low resolution and my monitor is a large one.

Actually in the start up, things are blocky and there is no option in "Screen Resolution" to fix it, only the same and a lower one.

Perhaps someone knows how to fix this?

Your problem is
gdm does not work properly, but kdm is fine. ?
distro? versions of gdm/kdm?

or .. you actually have a x -related problem?
(for this post relevant lspci -vv output, monitor specs, DISTRO, check lsmod, modelines, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf...)

In KDE I tried altering X server for Nvidia as a pop up advised.

I have been trying a lot to get compiz going.

Using 8.04. Pentium 3, 1.3 GH. 640 MB of RAM. Nvidia 128 MB Video card. Cable connection by Ethernet, 10/100.

I have found it difficult altering things to get compiz going.



Both GDE and KDE worked, but on return to GDE, blocky resolution, 800 x 600. Only a lower option in preferences.

best way to fix screen resolution problem in ubuntu 8.04.X works in gnome (not shure about kde)

open a terminal and type

sudo displayconfig-gtk

sudo= gives root previledges displayconfig-gtk opens the xorg config gui than select your monitor type

but select it by resolution not by model number or any of that jazz

1024x768 60hz will usually work good on most lcd monitors if u have a crt tho (the really old bricks you will need 600x400-ish)

example i have a 32inch widescreen and i use 1200x1000 at 60hz

Problem is it gives me 800x600 or less.

change the model to a screen that susports the resolution you are looking for "lcd panel 1024x768"

if it still gives you problems then you'r gunna half to alter your xorg.config

open up your search (for the computer) search for xorg.config
remember where it is (save to a txt document or somthing)

then type in a code like

sudo (insert place of file) xorg.config

look through it and find your monitor settings and add in the approipate resolution

The problem isn't Gnome or KDE, but the graphics drivers your xorg.conf is using. Might help if you could post the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Be that as it may, if you're using Ubuntu 8.04 and have an Nvidia card, try installing EnvyNG. It's an app written in Python which will download the latest ATI or Nvidia driver. It made setting up my Nvidia card with dual monitors uber easy.
