atouchpad issue with Ubuntu 6.10

iam using Ubuntu 6.10 and iam very glad with it but there is aproblem my touchpad it doesnot scrolling any body kan help mee ?

I'm getting the same problem on my laptop. The touchpad section in xorg.conf is the same as in Dapper 6.06, and scrolling is fine in that (I'm multibooting) - so I don't understand what's going on. I've also got Fedora Core 6 installed on another partition. Scrolling is OK in that too with a different xorg.conf touchpad section. I've tried that bit of the Fedora xorg.conf in Edgy 6.10, but it doesn't enable scrolling. So I have no suggestions for editing xorg.conf.

However, I've discovered one thing that does switch scrolling on. It's not elegant though. If I log out and log back in again, or kill the Xserver with ctrl-alt-backspace and log in again, scrolling works. But for some reason the logout panel icon at top right and the panel clock have now switched places and can't be moved back again.

Very odd.

This is a VERY common problem that I too am sharing. I believe this is an Edgy bug that has not been fixed yet. I've tried installing Edgy and updating all of the recent updates and the bug hasn't been fixed yet. I'll wait until this problem has been fixed before I install Edgy again.

Short term solution that works for me, run:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
(Make sure you select ExplorerPS/2 or something like that when it comes to the mouse section).

Its annoying, and I have to do it everytime I reboot, but after that my touchpad scolling works in every program!

Hope this helps. I have a feeling this has to do with how things are initialized or something, because running the above command doesn't change my xorg.conf file, but it seems to work.

You may find that adjusting acceleration and other parameters in mouse administration will help. The default parameters for mice aren't appropriate for the touch pad.

This is a VERY well documented bug in Edgy. The common "remedy" is to hit ctrl+alt+backspace when you boot up. For some reason the proper xorg.conf setting is not being detected on initial bootup. Has anyone tested the Feisty Builds yet to see if this problem has been fixed?

BTW, my solution to the problem has been to stick with Dapper....until the problem is fixed.
