ATI Driver installed. Ubuntu 5.10. not working

Hi all,

i followed this instructions " https://wiki.ubuntulinux.org/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI " ... i did it by the package " fglrx " in the repositories, and the i did it by downloading the driver from Ati.com ... none works.

if i change the Xorg.conf driver section to "fglrx" and the in X i do "fglrxinfo" i get nothing, mmy information says that it couldnt recognize my hardware.. but when i let it in "ati" it says:

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

when i install the package from the repositories, and install the "control panel of the driver" if i click on that in the menu start, it says the i dont have something related with FireGL...

anyway, im litle lost.. what can i do...

i have repeated the instruccions 3 times.. nothing... any ideas. ?

I had the mesa driver problem as well. Here's what I did to resolve it.

See

Removed all of the programs as stated in the guide at Ubuntu Forums by first typing:

Quote:
sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo apt-get remove linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) #Okay if it is already installed
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg #Select the fglrx driver
Then I rebooted.

Then reinstalled by typing

Quote:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) #Okay if it is already installed
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg #Select the fglrx driver
then I tested to see that it really did register the ATI drivers.

Don't forget to reboot again now.

After that I copied my xorg.conf file to a backup file and ran

Quote:
sudo aticonfig
. This generated a new xorg.conf file that worked like a peach with both my laptop LCD and my external LCD (in fact, I have a nice dual monitor setup which auto-detects when I have one or both of my monitors attached).

Hope this helps!

B
