Having delusions of competency and all, I thought I had the nvidia drivers loaded up and running. Seems I hadn't changed the "nv" to "nvidia" in my XF86Config file.
Glxgears runs at about 4500 frames in 5 sec w/ my FX5200.

But now my desktop freezes after about a minute with only the mouse responding.
What kind of problem am I having?

funny you should mention that... i had to do that in mandrake but not in ubuntu but, as i've said, the 3d acceleration seems to run surprisingly fast.

not sure what's up with your mouse. i remember seeing something about a possible bug with the sound and graphics cards in ubuntu. can't remember exactly what though. i'll try checking it out when i'm not meant to be studying for finals...

Yes nvidea driver works great but please use the synaptic package manager. If you try and use the driver off the nvidea website then you will face various desktop errors and this is the reason you have heard such horror stories. When you use the package manager then it install seamlessly and you shouldn't have any issues (you may need to look around the web for some tweaks if your into that.)

How would one remove the drivers installed from the nvidia site and know for sure they are completely out of the picture?

Driver remove

Try this:
apt-get remove nvidia-kernel-common
apt-get remove nvidia-glx
apt-get remove anything else you might have

rm /etc/rc?.d/*nvidia-glx
/etc/init.d/gdm stop

change your xorg.conf to use the "nv" driver, or use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to get a text UI wizard. It should remove nvidia drivers from your system.
