API Mis-Match When Trying to Launch X
I just installed this driver...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-9755.html
It worked fine for about 10-15 min and then the screen just froze. So I had to do a hard reboot and now when it tried to launch X I get a API mismatch error. Here is the complete message:
Quote:
ERROR: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernal module has the version 1.0-7184 but the X module has the version 1.0-9755. Please make sure that the kernal module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.
NVIDIA 0: Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system and that the NVIDIA device file have been created.

Grub boot to the recovery 6.10. You will be at the commanad line. Enter "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf". The the diver nvidia to nv or vesa and reboot. With your now working system use Synaptic to install nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-legacy as indicated for your video card.

My "now working system" is the one with the error.
The guys on the nvidia forum say that I should NOT be running nvidia-glx when using this latest driver...

Ok, I am back on my Ubuntu system. I fixed it (temporarily I am guessing) by doing this...
Quote:
If you use Ubuntu, please also ensure that the linux-restricted-modules packages have been uninstalled. Alternatively, you can edit the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules or /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common configuration file and disable the NVIDIA linux-restricted kernel modules (nvidia, nvidia_legacy) via:
DISABLED_MODULES="nv"

Found here...
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490
These instructions also say to uninstall the nvidia-glx package from Synaptic. I haven't done that yet, as I am not sure that is right.
