Try
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
You may need to uncomment the lines in /etc/apt/sources.list for the Universe and Multiverse repositories, and then run "sudo apt-get update" before trying to install build-essential.
What packages are you trying to install from source? There are about 16000 packages available from the Universe and Multiverse repos, so it is quite likely that what you want may be installable using apt-get.

Yes, but I generally find it useful to have Universe and Multiverse enabled. As I said in my previous post, it is likely that whatever the OP is trying to install will be available through apt with these enabled, without needing to compile from source.
Distribution: What's the point of this? I keep on trying new distros...

Hi everyone,
I currently don't have a connection to the Internet (that's why I really NEED to install it - to be able to connect to the Internet) so changing the repository list won't help.
But I found out how to do it:
The package was on the CD (both the main and restricted ones were there) - but I couldn't install it straight off the CD. The only way was to copy off the 'pool' and 'dists' folders to my home folder and put this into /etc/apt/sources.list:
Code:
deb file:///home/james/ dapper main restricted
Then I ran apt-get, fetched the updated list and installed make and the other packages I needed (linux-headers-386, build-essential... so on)
