antivirus?
 
Hi There,

I am a new user of Linux(Ubuntu 8.04)..do I need to look/search for an antivirus?anti malware?

This is really something you could have googled - it's one of the most frequently asked questions by newcomers to Linux.

ClamAV, Google the rest.

You don't really need it to protect your Linux installation, but it can be useful for protecting a dual-boot machine or your network in general.

I just read this article about BitDefender for Unices the other day. I found it interesting, but a little sales-pitchy. Nevertheless, I am now running the product and it seems to work well.

My point is that, while they may exist, the chances of encountering one "in the wild" are extremely low.

There are free (as in freedom and beer) programs that search for rootkits on linux systems:
http://www.chkrootkit.com/
http://rkhunter.sourceforge.net/
They should both be available in the Ubuntu repos.
