annoying flickering screen

Hi,
I've recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 and now I have a peculiar effect going on where the screen flickers on both left and right sides of the monitor. Everything I do on one side happens exactly the same on the other. Obviously it has something to do with the configuration of Xorg and is most likely a problem with v/hsync ranges. I've tested two monitors; one 22" and the other 17". I was able to get the 17" one to look decent at 1024x768 by issuing 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' but the same cannot be said for the larger monitor.

The funny thing is is that Ubuntu 6.10 had none of this flickering business. It may be possible that xvidtune settings need to be adjusted... I'm not at all sure.

Would someone please help me? Maybe even someone that's experienced something very similar...
Thanks

If you have a Shuttle system with the SiS Mirage 1 graphics chipset and are experiencing the same flickering screen as me; ditch Ubuntu and install Mandriva. Mandrake detected my hard drive (which I was also having troubles with in Ubuntu) right away and the flickering was eliminated! I've heard good things about Mandrake and hardware detection in the past and I guess it's true. I needed a distribution with the 2.6.20 kernel in order for the hard drive to be detected, which uses the 'sata_sis' driver for the controller.
