Amarok under gnome (ubuntu 6.10) -- install help

Hello,

Let me just start by saying I'm really new to linux, but experienced enough to know that the Amarok is a music player for KDE, not specifically designed for gnome.

Most preferably I would like to have iTunes under linux, but since Crossover (I'm guessing a problem with a bottle) won't let me install itunes, I figured that I would chance my music player of choice. I've seen Amarok in action, and know that I would like it over gtkpod.

I've researched installing amarok under gnome -- ubuntu 6.10 -- a little and I found out that it has a little KDE dependencies. I was wondering how to resolve these problems, and eventually install amarok under gnome (I have ubuntu, not kubuntu). Switching to Kubuntu just for amarok seems a little unnecessary since I have to move all of the files I already have from ubuntu to a new kubuntu (almost 25 gig, not substantial, but a huge hindrance to me).

Do I just install amarok like I do other programs, or is there something special that I have to do?

Thanks

I installed Amarok under Gnome using the Synaptic update manager without any problems, it installed the necessary dependancies without me needing to do anything else and it worked straight off from Ubuntu 6.10.

Maybe I was lucky because it was on a fairly new install so there was nothing for it to cause problems with.

Maybe wait for a couple more replies to see if anyone has had any problems and then make a decision on whether to install it, I prefer to see a few people say something will work rather than just one person who could have just got lucky.

HTH

I use Gentoo instead of Ubuntu and have been using Amarok without much issues. The only limitation I have is regarding my iPod. Amarok does not detect it and when asked to look for it, it displays the following message:
Code:
No new media devices were found.
If you feel this is an error, ensure that the DBUS and HAL daemons
are running and KDE was built with support for them. You can test
this by running "dcop kded mediamanager fullList" in a
Konsole window.
People in the Gentoo forums have suggested I run "Control Center" and look for some processes running, but I use Gnome and don't want to install KDE's Control Center just for that.

Do you use an iPod with Amarok? Have you been able to connect it?

Thanks

I haven't got n iPod so I can't check for that. I have got a Creative Nomad III Jukebox, I tried connecting that via USB, but that didn't get detected by Amarok, when I find the right firewire cable, I'll try it using that as well & post the results.

Click System/Admin/Synaptic Package Manager
Enter your root password
click "Search" at the top
Search for "amarok"... It should be the first thing that pops up.
Right CLick, Choose Mark for Installation
Click Apply at the top, Click OK to install Amarok and its dependencies...
After that, Click Applications/Sound and Video/Amarok to start Amarok.

Synaptic will take care of all the dependencies involved and installing should require little to no effort on your part. I prefer using some other media players, but I just installed Amarok, and it worked fine. Personally, I prefer XMMS, its smaller and in my opinion, easier to use.

Also, in case you're interesting, you can install the KDE desktop environment, "beside" your Gnome Environment. All you do is before you sign on, Click Sessions, and choose "KDE", then sign in, and it will boot you to KDE. To do that...

Go to the site below, and reference 1.7.1. I personally don't like KDE, but if you want to try KDE for some reason, it will give you access to all your files, programs, etc. with the KDE environment. I've installed KDE and Xfce, beside my Gnome desktop, and it works fine.

This is also a very good FAQ to keep handy, by the way (and in case your interested, using Terminal to install Amarok is explained in 1.6.4.10)
