After upgrading black screen and cannot use gui on ubuntu 13.10

After upgrading to 13.10 from 13.04. I get and error that says: "could not apply the stored configuration for monitors" right after I login. I can press ALt+CTl+F1 and access a terminal, but other than that no GUI. Any suggestions on where to start to find a workaround to this problem? is it just me or someone else is experience the same problem. I'm using my windows 7 boot (not my favorite) to communicate while someone gives me a hand. I thank you in advance.

Hi,

did Ubuntu switch to mir in 13.10 as threatened, or did the miss their self imposed deadline? If it is still running X you should be able to get a working (if not optinal) gui by removing your xorg.conf. Eg
Code:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.back

It's still on X11. Mir wasn't ready yet and will not be in until 14.04 - so it is not related to Mir.

I did what evo suggested. I found the path to xorg.conf, but it did not work after login I get this:
"Could not apply the store configuration for monitors
None of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:
Trying modes for CRTC 82
CRTC 82: trying mode 1280x720@0Hz with output at 1600x900@50Hz (pass 0)
CRTC 82: trying mode 1024x720@61Hz with output at 1600x900@50Hz (pass 0)
"
and many more of those CRTC 82:, it is kind of difficult to type them all on a phone. But I still have the same problem. Anyone with another suggestion? Thanks.

Hi,

ok, if you are really sure you moved that config out of the way, it must be reading the configuration from somewhere else. The /var/log/Xorg.0.log should tell you where it is reading the configuration from.

What exactly am I looking for?
I found this:
using system configuration directory "usr/share/X11/xorg.configuration.d"
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_tls_Context
(EE) Failed to load module "glamoregl" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) Nvidia: Failed to load the Nvidia kernel module. Please check your system's kernel log for additional error messages.

What else do you need? Thanks.

Hi,

ok we can now explicitly see it is failing to load both and X driver and kernel module. You need to try to disable X from trying to load them. Check the config files in the directory it mentions and also really confirm that you no longer have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

One this is disabled you should get a working X session and then you can proceed to getting the close nvidia drivers installed to get hardware acceleration.

Did you check the release notes for 13.04 for instructions related to this? Or am I being naive in assuming that Ubuntu produces proper release notes?

Evo2.

update:
After some research I found people saying that it was a kernel error, so I went and reboot my pc with a 3.8.0.31-generic kernel and not 3.11 kernel. Now I can used Gui and It is working just fine. just got a error for nvidia-304 package. Do you know how to fix this issue or both? so, i can use 3.11 kernel and fix the nvidia-304 error?

Thanks

opencv

Had me baffled too for a few hours, then reinstalled every package on a pristine install and found the problem is:

opencv or nvidia-319-updates (could also be another type of nvidia driver)

check:

dpkg-query -l | grep nvidia

opencv installs nvidia-319-* drivers which knackered my Dell laptop. Certainly one to watch. Haven't had nvidia problems since the days of opensuse 9,10,11.

One possible fix is:

Ctrl-Alt-F1
login as a normal user...
dpkg-query -l | grep nvidia-319
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-319-updates nvidia-setting-319-updates
ps -ef | grep X
sudo kill -9 <process-number>

Hey presto nvidia gone and opencv unfortunately. I can see why opencv-2.3 is the default on Debian Stable.
