After logon... nothing happens

I have just installed 5.04 with a Win2k dual boot (P4 1.8, 512mb, 17gb part, Radeon 8500 64mb).

It worked fine at first, did an apt-get upgrade, 60 mb download (of mostly openoffice updates) done a reboot then logged in, then the screen just hangs there all brown with the hard drive light blinking once every 6 or 7 seconds.

Tried again later login sweet as, surf the net, install Java 1.5 (Ubuntuguide.org VERY helpfull). Logged off then start the computer again later, hangs on the brown screen which comes up before gnome loads. Hard drive light blinks every few seconds.

So I post this from the Win2k portion of the same computer, no problems there.

Any help much appreciated!! Thanx.
