After logon... nothing happens

I have just installed 5.04 with a Win2k dual boot (P4 1.8, 512mb, 17gb part, Radeon 8500 64mb).

It worked fine at first, did an apt-get upgrade, 60 mb download (of mostly openoffice updates) done a reboot then logged in, then the screen just hangs there all brown with the hard drive light blinking once every 6 or 7 seconds.

Tried again later login sweet as, surf the net, install Java 1.5 ( VERY helpfull). Logged off then start the computer again later, hangs on the brown screen which comes up before gnome loads. Hard drive light blinks every few seconds.

So I post this from the Win2k portion of the same computer, no problems there.

Any help much appreciated!! Thanx.
