Well, the 'brown screen' is the desktop on a new install. I would bet the display is set wrong for your monitor. Ubuntu should have a bar at the top of the screen and one at the bottom.

To get rid of the ugly brown, right click on the desktop, and the pop up has a change background option. If you see that, the desktop is there, you are not seeing all of it. You could try the controls on your monitor, it could be the edges are stretched too far, and not visible.

You see, after logging I can see only smooth brown window with cursor and without any bars. Right click doesn't work also. OK, I will try to reduse my monitor.

Is your mouse moving the pointer around?

Are you running 5.10 or 6.04? If you are running Dapper Drake (6.04) then there might be problems because the final release will not be until June 1st.

Now, did you just install 5.10?

If you just did then you might need to reinstall the OS. If this same problems happens the reburn your ISO.

Brown Screen

I just installed Mandriva 2006.0, and after a fresh install, everything worked fine, but then after I got in GUI, and used urpmi to update a bunch of stuff for the first time I rebooted. Upon reboot I noticed same brown screen of frustration. I tried to install ATI's fglrx drivers, knowing full well that they are only approved up until Xorg 6.8, but I figured anything was worth a shot. Now I'm about 90% sure I'm gonna have to just reinstall everything anyway.
