After extended use, Ubuntu 5.10 randomly slows down/hangs
Hi all,

I'm getting this weird problem with Ubuntu 5.10. It's strange because this is the only distribution that I've ever encountered this in; earlier Ubuntus were also fine.

After an extended use of the operating system, my computer will start slowing down and eventually hang. Although the point where my computer starts to hang is sometimes random, it has always happened like this:
  • It happens after extended use (usually 1 or more hours)
  • First, my trackpad (this is on a laptop) starts to click (is that the word) when my trackpad is touched. Example: I accidentally move my mouse from the desktop to the Applications menu. Without clicking, it opens the menu up.
  • Then, after a few more minutes, the system sort-of becomes unresponsive. Firefox, for example, won't load up a link that I click and the logo animation doesn't move; New applications won't launch. Even shutting down/restarting stalls. I say sort of because I've been able to get it functioning as normal if I hold a key down (like shift) or moving the mouse while the computer does something that it stalled on.

Like I said, I have no idea what the problem was because I've tried earlier Ubuntus, Debian 3.0r1, and Slackware 10.2 on the same laptop and I've never encountered this happening on my laptop before.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'll be happy to post more infomation on hardware/software if it is needed as well.
