Added New User nothing works under new login
Hi
I have recently installed Ubuntu 6.10 on a Compaq Evo N800v laptop and all seemed to be going great. I have now come to add my girlfriend as an additional user which I did initially through the GUI. Upon logging in as the new user nothing works, there was no sound (normally there is a little tune on logging in!) the mouse is unresponsive and all you can do is ctrl-alt-backspace.
I tried removing the user and adding through sudo useradd -m [username] and passwd [username] but the result was exactly the same.
Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? Or at least give me some indication of where to look, this feels like it must be a configuration problem somewhere since the login with which I installed the system works AOK all the time.
Thanks
James

Check to see if the new user is in the same groups as the first user. The only group you may not want anyone else in is the admin group (I think), which is the one that allows sudo privileges (I think).

Hi
I have checked all the groups are the same. I even put the new user in the admin group just in case there was a problem but still no joy.

Definitely check group membership as cgjones suggested. Also some configuration data is saved in hidden files in the user's directory. Ergo the configurations will be different for your girl friend. Also if you install anything in user space it's only available to that user. If you've stuck with Add/Remove and Synaptic for installs that shouldn't be a problem. If you open the users home directory in Nautilus and do Crtl-h you'll be able to see hidden files and directories. Placing a "." as the first character of a file or directory name makes it hidden.

I have looked through the home directory for my user and the one that won't work checking hidden folders as well. I am not sure but I think this may have something to do with the wireless setup. When I login it launches nm-applet and asks for a password (keyring manager??) which then connects to the wireless network. Logging in as another user this does not happen. There is a file called .xsession-errors in each of the home directories and under the other users login this stops at:
evolution-alarm-notify-Message: Mon Mar 19 00:00:00 2007
evolution-alarm-notify-Message: Sun Mar 18 22:30:12 2007
(gnome-panel:4918): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with width -3 and height 24
whereas under my login this continues:
(gnome-panel:4589): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with width -3 and height 24
** Message: <information> You are now connected to the wireless network [myNetwork].
** Message: plugin_get_value 1 (1)
** Message: plugin_get_value 2 (2)
** Message: plugin_get_value 1 (1)
.... and so on
Don't know if I am barking up the wrong tree here but the group membership is definitely the same for bith logins.

Hi
Just to say I did fix this issue in the end but only by starting again I'm afraid. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu and then added the new user before installing any additional software (Network manager etc). This seemed to do the trick and everything is working now.
Thanks
James
