accessing a linux partition from a fat32 partition?
 

hi! is it possible to access an ext2 or ext3 partition from windows 98?

explore2fs can not read home
 

with explore2fs, i was able to view my linux partition. i even tried transferring files from ext3 to fat32. but /home, which contains iso files i want to salvage, is inaccessible. i am hoping that, if i can not repair my ubuntu system, i still can transfer my iso files to either fat32 or / where they can be accessed when it is time to burn them to cd recordables.

is there a way to access /home of an irreparable ubuntu installation? i used the ubuntu installation cd as a rescue disc but i could not cd to or change permissions of /home with it.

hmm, to save your data........boot up with a LiveCD like knoppix and move your files around.......then fix the ubuntu partition/s

<edit/> your rescue disk should be able to mount/unmount partitions with/without
read/write permissions.........I have done this with CD#2 of Slackware to fix my screw ups.......

1. with the ubuntu installation and live cds, i mounted /dev/hd4 to /TempDir. under /dev/hda4 is /home, which contains the iso files i want salvaged by first transferring them to a fat32 partition or /, which can be mounted/accessed through a rescue disc.

2. i could navigate through the directories, except /home. neither "cd /home" on /TempDir or "chmod 777 home" worked. is this a permissions issue? if it is, i am under the impression that i should be able to do both because running the installation cd in rescue mode is said to come with root privileges. or is my system just pretty screwed up?

3. i tried slackware's boot disk (bare.i) to mount/access /dev/hda4. Among the errors printed are as follows:

Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: no init found.

Try passing init=options to kernel.
