Access sata hard drive, sil3512 controller

Linux, specifically cannot see my sata hard drive.

I know that it's connected correctly and the BIOS can see the drive.

I imagine that Linux needs some drivers to access the drive?

I am using the sil3512 controller on a Gigabyte K8NSPro motherboard.
How should I proceed about being able to access this drive?

Are you trying to install or have you just added a drive?

You may need to install a more recent kernel. Ubuntu and Debian both allow you to apt-get install a new kernel.

What is the output of uname?

Actually, I was able to mount the drive.
I'll post a little later how I achieved that.
