About Defragmentation & Scandisk

Hello,

I am running a dual boot system and what I need to know is if it is ok to run the defragment & Scandisk programs in Windows XP Home Edition or not to run them. I also would like to know if UBUNTU has any programs that need to be run once in awhile like the defragment program or not. I would appreciate it if someone would respond to this as soon as possible.

Thank you,

JaDan Sudderth

You can run scandisk & defragmentation where windows is installed, it doesn't affect linux (assuming that you have not installed linux on a fat32 partition)
Leave the linux partions alone when you run scandisk & defragment
smartctl is probably closest to scandisk & one doesn't need to defragment a linux partition because of the way files are stored in linux

fsck is the scandisk equivalent and will run by itself, normally every 30 days or 30 mounts of the file-system (i.e. restarts)
