7.10 Ubuntu upgrade no longer shuts down

I just upgraded from Feisty to 7.10. Problem is that when I try to shut down, the system hangs- screen blanks and PC stays on but the system doesn't respond to keystrokes. I have to do shut down and then, on reboot the system does an fsck always finding errors.

Have you tried shutting down from the console? try either of these commands.
# shutdown -h now
or
$ sudo shutdown -h now
Keep your eye on the text (if any ) it may give you some clues about whats happening.

Thanks for the tip. Sadly the screen blanks and the computer stays powered up, but not active. I have to turn it off and do fsck- always finding errors. HELP!!!!!!!!

I had this in feisty, turned out it was to do with the fglrx drivers, do you have an ATI card installed? Try installing the latest drivers, or reinstalling them.
