64 bit cpu-64 bit Ubuntu-are there 32 bit app issues?
I have 64 bit AMD cpu. Also 64 bit version of Debian. There are troubles with 32 bit application compatability.
Does Ubuntu have this problem? Will I have this problem if I use the 32 bit Ubuntu with 64 bit cpu? |
Also, when I am asked, on the download page...
"What type of computer do you have?" 1. Standard personal computer (x86 architecture, PentiumTM, CeleronTM, AthlonTM, SempronTM) 2. 64bit AMD and Intel computers I have AMD 64, but can I choose "Standard personal computer" so I get the 32 bit version? |
To answer your questions....Yes.
You have a 64-bit AMD proc, which makes it x86_64 arch. That means that you can run.... IA-32 arch (standard PC, i386 based comp (now called x86)) x86_64 arch (AMD64, Intel EM64T, etc) 64bit Linux on a 64bit comp runs much faster then 32bit, at the cost of some compatitbility. My laptop (AMD Turion64x2) was running Fedora 7 (32 bit). The apps worked, but, wireless and sound did not. My sound card would not work with a 32bit kernel. Now that I'm running 64bit Linux, everything works. Just wondering, what apps don't work? |
Armanox.
Skype, flash player and java (and most likely other also) do not have 64 bit versions and the process for making 32 bit functional is over my head. Maybe somewhere down the road I can try it again, but for now I would just like to get a good Linux box up and running. I don't care about having the best of everything. I wish I would have known about this problem before I bought the processor. |
Skype and Java I have yet to use in 64 bit Linux. I was aware of the issue with flash, but, the workaround for flash is very simple. Go ahead and try the 32 bit Ubuntu and see if all of your hardware works. If it does, then have fun!

64 vs 32 vs AMD vs Intel - Application Purgatory?
Is this a job for "compile an extra kernel"?
(Boot either way for the tasks you wish.) -- or -- A job for "Virtualization Man" ? (Build the big one and virtualize the smaller) https://www.virtualbox.org/ |

None that I read in this thread appeared any better. (If your H/W works on 32b, use 32b?)
I see no reason not to optimize where apparent deficiencies exist. Maybe most of his work will benefit from the use of the machine's fullest capability. Since we really don't know what his situation is, could be he only needs to run down-graded for a very small pinch of his time. Though I do agree that booting into a different kernel is also a suboptimal fix. Do I take it you also have issues with VBox other than its association with the wicked warlock of the west? Help me understand why you believe its a non-problem (what steps/changes were taken/made), and if so - why it was never posted here for this man's benefit? (He queried, seeing that this ANCIENT thread is apparently still observed.) I came to the thread attempting to chase a vague memory fragment about similar issue, though really more AMD vs. Intel oriented, and was performing a due-diligence exercise prior to recommending a particular box of hardware. How is it you came back to the dead-letters file, or made effort to elucidate? |
