6.10 too unstable for me

I run Ubuntu "Edgy Eft" 6.10. I used Automatix to install a variety of programs. I frequently install the updates when they are made available.

I have experienced a good deal of instability in applications.
- Firefox crashes often when running Flash-player, frequently if I close a tab before a page has finished loading, if it contains an applet. I don't care much for Flash, but as so many Web sites use it for legitimate reasons, I can't do without it.
- The movie player (Totem) crashes frequently, sometimes just the GUI crashes, but the music or video continues to play even while the crash guard comes to clean up.
- Java and OpenOffice.org don't get along. I installed the commercial version of Java, via the Ubuntu package manager, so that I can see Java applets in Firefox. This creates problems with OpenOffice.org, even when I try to set OpenOffice.org to use a different version of Java. Essentially, OpenOffice.org crashes when I exit it using the top-right X button.

Are these problems that other Ubuntu users frequently experience, or is it likely the result of bad hardware?

Thanks.

When I ran edgy (I'm now using feisty) I had none of those problems you mentioned, the only thing I didn't use, which you mention, is Automatix, because I don't want to fsck up my system.

This could solve your problem of flash enabled pages crashing when you open them in Firefox.

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_E...ozilla_Firefox

It mentions a an edit to "/usr/bin/firefoxrc" to include this "export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1" as the last but one line in the file.

I can't say if this is your problem but I read in the ubuntu forums, although I couldn't tell you where now, that automatix can corrupt files. For that reason I don't use it. I have been using edgy for about a month now on a 64bit notebook with 32 bit libraries installed without any problems.

Not much help I know but it does sound like something isn't quite right with the multimedia part of the installs which I believe is a lot of what automatix does.

I have some problems like yours but I'm using 64bit version of Ubuntu Edgy which really has some problems like that.

Firefox closing and ubuntu logging off for no obvious reason

I have just recently been having problems with ubuntu also. I just installed easy ubuntu which did show some errors when i tried installing codecs for rhythmbox but did install/enable drivers for ATI. It did say to put wget..... for medibuntu into the terminal but then it comes back and says no open PGP data found. Also, firefox closed on me. Just closed for no obvious reason. It has also logged me off too. When I switch users just so no one can get on my comp if they come in my room when im gone, it'll log me out of gaim and it hasn't done that till today. So yeah, as you can tell I'm a newb...have had linux for almost a week now.
