3d accelleration flaky in Ubuntu 6.06 on Dell Inspiron e1405 laptop

I recently installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my new Dell Inspiron e1405/640m laptop. However, the 3D accelleration doesn't seem to work properly. Cedega thinks that the #3D works, but other games, like Cube 2, run at only 1-2 FPS. I have an Intel MA950 chipset, so I don't need to install any ATI or nVidia drivers. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

It's not that you don't need to install an accelerated driver, but that you cannot! So far as I am aware there are no linux accelerated drivers for Intel graphic chipsets: Only NVIDIA (recommended) and ATI, so I think you are out of luck here.
Your options:
1] Moan at Intel for them to release linux drivers for their chipsets like NVIDIA do.
2] Do not buy a laptop that doesn't have an NVIDIA graphics chipset.
3] Play games v-e-r-y slowly!

I have been playing Quake3 Arena and UT2004 on another Inspiron laptop that has an Intel graphics chipset, so I should have 3D accelleration.

Also, my 3D screensavers seem to work fine, so it looks like it's just the games that don't work in 3D.

It seems that my computer might actually be running the screensavers without 3D support. I know that I should have 3D with the Intel chipset, but it isn't working.
