Smile 2 vps vs 1 vps

I was reading the linode documentation and they recommend 1 vps for mysql and 1 for apache; not sure if they meant this only applies for there smaller setups 380mb or under.

So my questions would is If i run apache on 1 512 vps and 1 vps 512 for mysql; would that get me better performance vs getting 1 1080 vps and running lamp under one server?

Any recommendation are appreciated. This is for ubuntu 9.04
