[Xubuntu 8.04] Updated the OS using Update Manager, and now there are two kernels.

After installing the OS, I went to Update Manager, and after all the process was done, it asked me to restart. I'm dual-booting with WinXP, so when the GRUB screen appeared, I see that now there are two different Linux kernels shown. Here's what's on the screen:

Quote:
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.04, memtest86+
Other operating systems:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
I assume from the above that one of the things updated (or at least downloaded) was the kernel, but why didn't it install? What can I do about this? Thanks in advanced.

Hello

It did install a new kernel, they will be the 2.6.24- 17-generic enteries in the grub list. You can still boot into the older 2.6.24 -16 kernel if things went tits up with the new version.

Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.04, memtest86+
Other operating systems:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Regards

Stefan

Thanks for the quick reply! Really appreciate it. About the issue; the thing is that I don't want the older version of the kernel around, how can I remove it?

EDIT: Nevermind, found the solution in here (guess I suck at teh zearch funktion)

sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-KERNEL_NAME

...and it does the job great. Thanks for the help!

I have had Ubuntu update to a kernel that wouldn't boot and then you might be quite happy that you still had the choice of the older kernel.
