[Ubuntu 9.10]Be very aware
 

It should be released today.

However, if you have a Huawei modem, be very carefull as 9.10 will more than likely NOT support it.

If it's your only means of connectivity, skip it.

I don't have one of those, but as a rule I never update Ubuntu until it has been out (GA'd) for at least a month. It's always caused me problems - no big deal on my test box, but is on the others.

So do I. I only run LTS versions if I have that option and even those I only upgrade 6 months after release.

The RC is working mostly fine. The one thing that annoys the hell out of me is GRUB 2. If it were production ready, OK, but it isn't. It doesn't break anything but in spite of the advantage I hear about, to me it just feels restrictive (console resolution) compared to GRUB legacy...

Has anyone run into bug 453579? I was planning to upgrade to 9.10 and at the same time give ext4 a try (haven't ever used it before), but this bug gave me second thoughts. In fact, after reading the release notes for 9.10 I'm left wondering whether or not Karmic Koala as a whole should have been released as scheduled. Would it have been so terrible to delay a couple weeks to work out some of these issues? Honestly, I've seen early betas of other distros in better shape than this final release.

ext4 has had issues for a while - Linus "went off" when it was merged.
As for Ubuntu, I upgraded to 9.04 last week - be a while before I look at 9.10. Don't see any reason to rush into a (any) release.

We'll, I'd be happy to move to 9.04 if it wasn't for the Intel graphics bugs (my video chips are Intel). When you say you don't see any reason to rush into a release, are you referring to end users or distributors? As long as Ubuntu sticks to its current fixed release schedule policy, it's gonna be tough for them to not rush things.

The users - the (distro) devs can do what they want. My machines get updated when *I* feel the need. It's good to have the option, but unless I'm participating in alpha/beta testing, I can't see the sense in rushing in.

Ditto. I just wish that Ubuntu wouldn't be so strict about the whole "we always release on the fourth and tenth month of the year" thing when there are so many unresolved issues on the table. Release scheduling aside, though, they should have IMHO at least fallen back to making ext3 the default option in the installer, considering the ext4 situation.

They are not always that strict; remember 6.06 which should have been 6.04. Wonder what's going to happen with 10.04.

I'm sticking to LTS versions and update about 6 months after they're released. I don't have the need for the latest and the greatest. My girlfriend will not be amused (to put it mildly) if it breaks.

In my personal opinion Ubuntu is loosing it and for that reason I'm seriously considering to switch, but not sure yet which distro is the proper alternative. I will probably start a 'which distro is best for us' thread soon :(

I had various problems with 9.10 and have since given up on it. I begged the gurus in #ubuntu for help, and it felt a lot like begging proprietary software vendors to fix bugs. I eventually spazzed out in total frustration and left.

If you're wondering why I was upset, the new Ubuntu disabled the line-in on my Sound Blaster X-Fi card, while the same ALSA drivers on Slackware and Arch worked completely. One guy said it was my hardware setup. Arrogant.

Interestingly, an article about Karmic Koala's problems has made Slashdot.

I read TFA and IMHO it's pretty objective.

Yeah, the new Ubuntu is a mess!Nothing works properly!
I've gone back to the older version, but will install some other Linux on another partition.
I'll never go for an upgrade quickly again! Costly lesson!

Well, I've just found out that one of my computers won't wake up from suspend anymore; the machine wakes up but the display remains black.
