LXer: Why Normal People Don't Use Linux

Published at LXer:

A way back I blogged in a self-important and knowing way about Why People Donít Use GNU/Linux. I'd like to update that now, and thus the appearance of The Four Eyes:

The four I's huh? Well even I can easily refute these lame points. Lets see.

"1. Inertia: it’s a lot of effort to change your ways and your system." Well that's the funny thing about inertia, it takes a lot of energy to counter it suddenly, but a little of effort spread over a long time will completely change inertia. (Kind of like the slow development, recognition, and adoption of GNU/Linux.)

"2. Ignorance: people just don’t know about Free Open Source Software." See that's where normal market forces come into play, with advertising and marketing that may be provided by the new Netbook business community. Also from general exposure in schools, friends, associates, governments and social networks. It wont happen overnight but it will.

"3. Indifference: people just don’t care what flavour software they use, and why should they?" Exactly!! They just want it to work and not have to maintenance it (security, malware, virus protection, defrag, blah, blah,...).

"4. Innovation: there is no show-stopping, gob-smacking, utterly compelling reason to use Linux." I wouldn't say that is true, but Windows hasn't had this since Win 3.1 & 95. In fact, the differences between the Windows have always been quite small in my opinion. Now if you're tired of windows issues, then maybe GNU/Linux does present a show-stopping, compelling reason to use Linux. Everytime I respond to someone who complains about supporting a windows machine with the "try Linux and here's why" line, their jaw drops. That's the response of a show stopping experience.

Yes, normal people do use Linux.

A: Yes
B: No
C: Do you need to ask after reading some of his posts?

If my 9 yr old can run linux and even install packages anyone can.

If by "normal" they mean the idiots that shouldn't be allowed to touch a PC, then no normal people do not use Linux.

In most of my common venues, I am seen as "relatively normal"---at least until I mention that I use Linux. Perhaps there is a paradox: Large numbers of normal people can absolutely use Linux---many would never KNOW they were using it---but if they would talk openly about being Linux users, they would not longer be perceived as normal. Their individual self-esteem would determine whether this was an issue......

The concept of being normal is highly subjective and really overrated. What is normal for me (curiosity, willingness to try new things, contributing to the society) may be quite abnormal to others. What's the point of achieving "normalcy" in somebody's book, if you don't care much of their believes anyway?

But if the majority suggest "B" is the correct answer, do we need to petition Jeremy to change your handle to AbbyNormal?

I'd have to have a survey then. Choose a more suitable name for brianL.

I dunno about you people, but I consider myself very fortunate and lucky NOT to be "normal" in any way.

LOL.

Yup, we're all a little crazy in our own way.

BTW- I know a few "AbbyNormal" people (who shouldn't be allowed near a PC) that get along just fine with Ubuntu- much better than they did with Windows.

Cheers
