LXer: Where the heck is Etch?

Published at LXer:

Last September, some of the Debian Linux distribution's leadership wanted to make sure that Etch, the next version of Debian, arrived on its December 4th due date. So, the "Dunc-Tank" group decided to experiment with financially supporting some key developers to get Debian out the door on time.

Bah it will release when it is ready. What most people do not understand is Debian isn't just for i86 like most other distros, instead Debian supports several architectures.

Debian -- Ports
http://www.debian.org/ports/

So the many developers have to make sure it is bug free on not just one but many other ports.

Plus the fact that when it releases it really is Stable. Unlike other distros that push to release by a certain date or that have a set release schedule.

Here are the slides from a recent presentation by Martin F Krafft to a group of DDs, subtitled, Why we have not yet released, and what you can do about it. It doesn't break any new ground for people familiar with the process, but it's an interesting diversion while we wait. Use your right and left arrow keys to navigate thru the presentation.
